About the Sixth Floor

With over 50 barristers, 17 of whom are Senior Counsel, the Sixth Floor has a unique breadth of experience across a wide range of practice specialties.

For over half a century, the Sixth Floor has been the home to an illustrious list of barristers whose careers have been distinguished by judicial appointment. Former members of the Sixth Floor include the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, the Hon. Tom Bathurst AC QC (and his immediate predecessor, the Hon. James Spigelman AC QC).  Justice Payne of the Court of Appeal, Justices McCallum and Sackar of the Supreme Court, Justices Flick and Perry of the Federal Court of Australia, and Judge Whitford SC and Judge Wass SC of the District Court, were also long standing members of the Sixth Floor.

Many retired judges, including former High Court Justice, the Hon. Michael McHugh AC QC, practised from the Sixth Floor, as did the late Sir Maurice Byers CBE QC.

The Sixth Floor also has two associate members: the Hon. Antony Whitlam QC and the Hon Murray Tobias QC.
