Neil Williams came to the Bar in 1989 and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2001. He conducts cases, and advises on, major environmental and planning issues (such as the Barangaroo project for Lend Lease, the Maules Creek mine for Whitehaven Coal, the Mt Thorley-Warkworth project for Rio, the Gold and Copper Resources litigation for Newcrest, the Macarthur River mine project for the traditional owners and the Lake Cowal gold mine project for Barrick Gold), major tax matters (such as Commissioner of Taxation v Futuris, and Deputy Commissioner of Taxation v Broadbeach Properties in the High Court, and Commissioner of Taxation v Star City Casino in the Federal Court), major constitutional issues (such as the Fortescue Metals challenge to the Minerals Resources Rent Tax for the Commonwealth, the challenge to mandatory sentencing in Magaming v Commonwealth for the appellant, and Australian Broadcasting Authority v Today FM for the Authority), a wide range of general administrative law matters, competition and consumer law matters, broadcasting matters, and criminal appeals. He appears in all Australian jurisdictions, the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Nauru.
He is the co-author of Uniform Evidence in Australia (LexisNexis 2015) the LexisNexis Federal Criminal law Service, Commonwealth Criminal Law (1990), the editor of Key Issues in Judicial Review (2014), and the author of numerous published papers.
He is the convenor of the Public Law Section of the NSW Bar, and a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law.
